The best and most colourful pieces for layering and staying warm this Spring

I don’t know about you but I am very much a Spring/Summer kinda gal’ and autumn/winter weather makes me feel rubbish and have zero energy and a short attention span. It’s just been London Fashion Week and it always gives me a buzz of excitement about Spring being around the corner and I start to fantasise about getting my summer wardrobe down from out of the loft… LOL (as if I have a loft, but I like the idea of it) Then BAM Feb weather turns up and all fantasies are replaced with ‘OMG how do I stay warm in this weather?’

My answer is of course layering but in a clever and colourful way. I recommend we use colours positive psychological and physiological effects to boost our moods and layer cleverly aka choose pieces that transition between seasons and can be worn throughout the year as much as possible. Take the buy less and choose well approach which really means better quality and more expensive but trust me not only do they last and fit longer but they feel SO much better on your skin.

Did you know that yellow is the worlds happiest colour? It replicates the sunshine, something we all desperately needs right now in the UK. It’s a hugely stimulating colour meaning it keeps our minds busy and helps with clarity. That clarity can help us make lots of decisions and keep brain fog at bay.

I have selected 8 pay day treats that fit the bill of either colourful, clever, Tran seasonal and will last you much longer and we can all spend a bit more today because of payday Friday – yay! Let me know what you think?!

What knitwear can I layer over and underthings?

Ok, confession time… I have just bought both of these above jumpers and I’m not even sorry…. Check out my insta daily to see when they arrive because when they do… you will all know haha.

The colour turquoise helps to stabilise your emotions because it’s a mix of calming blue and grounding green. Blue releases oxytocin the feel good hormone and green helps to lower cortisol the stress hormone. This tasselled number will brighten up any denim look whilst sorting out your funny mood. It will work with any leather items and of course layered over dresses and paired with printed skirts… SHE IS DIVINE. She will work with metallic boots, trainers or even a sexy stiletto heel if you want to go for it. Turquoise

The short-sleeved and cropped bright green jumper I’m imagining wearing under my leather and denim jackets as well as blazers for pub drinks or brunches. She will fit nicely under denim boiler suits (like the one below) jumpsuits as well as under or over cami style slinky dresses. A bight green like this has a lot of yellow in it to get the vibrancy of the colour. Green = lowering of the stress hormone and yellow is the happiest colour - what a result of a cropped jumper!

What basics do I need for layering?

When the wind howls like it has been this week, we need our basics to be made from natural fibers. This is because they help to keep us warmer. The high necks or collar also add some extra support from the cold. Go for a low v shape neckline and collar if you are busty and a roll neck if you have a medium to small bust. Im a 32D and I can just get away with roll necks if that helps you decide. If you are super cold though and want roll neck, layer over a v-neck cardi or lots of long necklace to give the illusion of a v neckline.

Red releases adrenaline the flight or fight response hormone. This response turns into energy. This energy can raise your blood pressure or even raise your body temperature so go get yourself some red jumpers for layering and extra coziness.

Wear these basics with quite honestly anything and everything, that’s the beauty of a good basic, they set your outfit up

What about transitional trousers/skirts?

We all know how I feel about leopard print - it is my version of a contemporary neutral and it goes with EVERYTHING. It gives some texture to block colour, dazzle’s with metallics and makes the perfect print to clash with any other print (thanks Laura)

A leopard print midi skirt is perfect to layer over thick winter tights over even leather leggings with chunky boots and cozy knitwear. Then when it’s warmer it can be bare legs and trainers/cowboy boots and a denim jacket or bare legs, sandals and a cami top!

These delicious green wide legs are perfect for work or play. Or desk to disco my friend Beth used to refer to it as. For a casual stroll you can wear high tops, a hoodie and a blazer with them or a smart trainer, body and posh blazer for evening or dinner around a friends!

What are your top picks for payday?

So here we have my 2 top picks, one more versatile than the other…LOL. But let’s talk about the psychological benefits of pink first shall we? Pink has two jobs, that’s because there’s two types of pink - the bright strong and intense colour vs the light pink tints. Light pink is a beautiful colour to wear if you have a lot of listening to do - it’s very empathetic, if you have a friend or colleague in need of a good ear - light pink is there for you, it’s also a very charming colour so if you want to work a room it will work it for you! Strong and vivid pinks have similar properties to red, it’s a colour to get you noticed and a feel-good, get stuff done colour!

I have been lusting after this cape for about 3 weeks, can you believe it’s Zara? Zara is on fire at the moment colour wise! I only recommend buying things like jackets and skirts/trousers from them, things you don’t wash so frequently because the quality is totally naff otherwise. However, this cape won’t really need to be washed at all. I’d wear it with straight-cut skirts/dresses to play with my proportions and wide-leg trousers to keep it all fluid.

Now, this denim boiler suit is all kinds of excellent, pop the green sleeveless knit or the roll neck underneath for extra warmth or the turquoise jumper over the top to make it look like jeans and a jumper (annoying for the loo FYI) Wear with chunky boots or high tops in cooler month or Birkenstocks/sandals when Spring shows up.

There we have my payday picks! But before I go, I wanted to explain why I love being a Personal stylist in London so much. I care SO much about my clients. It’s not about playing dress-up and masking insecurities with fabulous clothes (don’t get me wrong we do play dress up and it’s fabulous) but about reconnecting with who you are and relearning how you can reflect that person through how you dress.

It’s a long process built on openness, trust and honesty and I use my skills a damn good stylist but also my intuition and I pick up on the smallest things which can really help me do the very best job for my clients. It’s a different experience for everyone and I make sure everything is tailored exactly to what will benefit you the most (as well as sticking to budgets and many other important factors)

Sometimes I feel like I can read people’s minds which is VERY good for my role as a Personal stylist. Helping both men and women feel confident and more positive about themselves AND grow in confidence blows my mind and makes me feel so happy.

Stylish wishes as always,
