The best Spring trends for your body shape

Trends and body shapes – two words that cause total mayhem in our brains. Trends because they are like marmite and don’t always last for longer than a season so is it worth investing in?! Plus, they can be tricky to adapt to wear in your everyday wardrobe. Body shape causes drama because if you don’t understand your shape it is SO hard to modify the styles to work for you.

How to find your body shape

If you don’t know how to dress for your figure check out my free body shape Ebook to help you suss out your shape. If you are still struggling, my top tip for looking and most importantly feeling great is to make sure you are in proportion. You want your shoulders and hips to be inline and to cinch in your waist and elongate your legs.

Not sure of your shape still?

If working this out makes your head want to explode, make sure you choose a shape that reflects your hips. For example, if you are straight up and down with little on no waist, you want to choose cuts that reflect that. If you have a narrower waist and blessed with hips that curve, you want to choose clothing that has the curve shape e.g Aline.

What if I am petite or tall?

Make a tailor your best friend – they are like having access to a wizard! Contrary to popular belief its actually much harder to dress if you are tall compared to petite. This is because you can always take up hems but you can add on extra fabric for taller ladies!

If you are petite, 5’2 or shorter, make sure the fabric doesn’t drown you and you get lost in a print. Choose smaller prints to compliment your size. Dress tonally to create a column and add length to your frame. The current mono colour (all one colour) is perfect for this and will help add height to your frame. This is because it elongates you and your shape so that eyes are drawn up to your face creating length. Winning! Find out more about dressing tonally here. The micro mini-trend will also work if that’s your cuppa t!

If you are tall, 5’7 or taller, you can go wild with long layers and floaty fabrics for an elegant style. No issues of print size or how to use colour. The real issue for you is making sure leg and sleeve lengths are correct. I actually recommend shortening midi dresses to make a mini or wearing buttoned/shirt dresses open like a long cardi/kimono vibes. A quick option would be to roll up sleeves that are a touch short too. If you aim for wide leg trousers they are usually SO long that they become the right length for you.

The best trend for taller ladies is the one and only maxi length – wahoooo. So effortless and elegant. They are drop dead gorge and are so versatile. They can be worn all year round and dressed up or down so easily. Because of your height you can handle ALL the fabric and I say make the most of it!

I have a long/ extra high waist, now what?

Not everyone is aware that sometimes you can have a high or long waist. This means that it is slightly out of proportion and harder to dress. If you have a long waist, it means that you body is longer than your leg length. High waisted anything is a must. Wear Vertical Prints or Patterns in Bottoms. Choose Shorter Jackets and monochromatic dressing. Wear a Wide Belt or something like Paper Bag Designs. Colour Match Belts with bottoms too, TUCK IN to elongate your legs.

The best trend for you  is matching co-ords. This is because by matching your top and bottom half you can help balance the difference out bu again tricking the eye that you are in propotion by matching your colours and outfits – wahoooo. You may struggle with one pieces like jumpsuits because of your long waist so matching co-ords is the closet thing to a one piece. Plus you can mix and match it with other pieces in your wardrobe – winning!

If you have a high waist, it means your waist is higher up between under the bust and the waist. A high waist means that your gorgeous waist sits close to your bust.

It is very important to have a fitted bra that lifts your bust so that there is as much space between your waist and bust as possible. This creates length and shows off your amazing waist. If you want to bring your waist down slightly, wear a long sleeve to pull peoples eyes lower than your waist. You can also use blouses and tops with front ties on to give the illusion of a lower waist. Don’t hide it in baggy and loose clothing, wear tighter tops in fabric like jersey to show where it falls.

I am an hourglass – what works for my body shape?

The hourglass shape is super feminine– you are blessed with a sexy silhouette. You could be anything between having a neat frame or fuller in shape but you have a defined waistline, often with a proportioned bust and bottom to contrast your waist. You may have curvier legs too. Your shape excels with great fit and tailoring with movement.

The best trend for you for SS22 is the brights! Head to toe colour to celebrate your divine figure. For those of you who want to take your sexiness to the next level, figure-hugging knitted dresses (also a top trend see here) or for those of you who are new to colour try adding a bright accessory. Berets are big this season as are bright bags. Wearing colour is different for everyone, for some it’s a gradual step by step approach starting with accessories, some people start with print, some love harmonious/tonal dressing whilst others like to go for it with complimentary/clashing or even triadic. I am an athletic build – what works for my body shape?

The athletic shape is perfectly in proportion and typically taller than the average woman. You may have gentle curves and a bust/bottom (like me) or have the more athletic shape. In all honestly – you can wear pretty much anything you fancy.

The best trend for you for SS22 is the cut out trend. This doesn’t mean baring your midriff – It can be an incredible neckline, a backless number, a long slit or even just one sided little peep of skin. You have the long limbs for it so flaunt it – why not?!

I am a pear body shape - what works for my body shape?

You will have tiny, narrow or slightly sloping shoulders, a smaller bust and an amazing narrow waistline. You are blessed with curvaceous hips and thighs that ooze femininity. It’s likely that when you buy clothes you buy smaller sizes for tops and have a nightmare finding jeans that don’t gape at the waist.

The best trend for you for SS22 is fringed jackets. The fringing not only adds instant cool vibes to your outfit but add texture and detail to your petite top half and therefore creating balance in your shape and voila – you are in proportion. If you aren’t a fan of  frigeing, try pearls or studs instead!

I am a strawberry body shape - what works for my body shape?

The rarest shape! You have a fuller bust and shoulders with only a little definition between waist and hips. You are narrower around the waistline, hips, bottom and thighs. Creating definition and lifting your bust line whist adding volume to your lower half will help you to feel sensational.

The best trend for you for SS22 is the feather trend! This is because you want to create proportion between your stronger shoulders and wider bust and add volume to your slender bottom half to give the illusion of proportion.

Feathers do just the trick because they add texture and detail to match your shoulders to your bottom half creating a column shape which aids the eye to perfect body proportions.

I am an apple body shape - what works for my body shape?

You have the most DIVINE legs and curvy bust – what a killer combo. You are in proportion (yay) but tend to carry weight around your mid section and don’t have a particularly defined waistline. It’s all about highlighting your bust, hip-line and legs.

The best trend for you for SS22 is the mid-rise trend! Yes! That’s right the 90s is actually your friend. Wearing mid rise jeans and tops that sit hip line are perfect for creating the column shape and adding length to your figure. Finish with a longer layer or bang on trend blazer to feel neater!

There we have it! There are of course tonnes of other trends that will work for each shape, some will also work for a variety of body shapes. If you’d like to find out my SS22 top pick trends check out last weeks blog here.
