How to wear the latest SS22 trends with what’s already in your wardrobe.
We all know I am more of a fan of developing your own unique personal style. We do this by understanding your dominant style personality and then taking influences from other styles to create your own unique version. But… there’s nothing quite like the start of a new season and finding inspiration from the catwalks and newness in shops to develop your style and update your wardrobe.
Our style develops as we do both personally, professionally and as our confidence grows. As this happens we can take inspiration from the latest trends and adapt them to suit our seasonal pallet, body shape and style personality. We can also refer to our wardrobes and decide what items need a refresh and also understand what pieces really work hard for us and try bolder options if we wish.
This year sees the return of the mini, maxi, statement bright’s plus feathers and fringing – yay! Styles I can’t get on board with are the oversized blazer (still it just does nothing for anyone unless youre 6’4), sexy cut outs, branded bags, Y2K, school uniform and urm… many more because they are unrealistic to the everyday wardrobe and some are just bizarre. Bikini in the city… I mean… I’ll say no more. If you’d like to see more check out who what wears breakdown of the latest trends.
I am focusing on the most versatile and actually wearable trends in this blog so that you can start to get excited about dressing for spring and we can celebrate that we have made it through the winter!
Wearable trend 1 – The Mini
YES, YES, YES, YES to the mini. There absolutely is a mini skirt or dress length for everyone. I think they are so versatile too, tights or leather leggings underneath in the cooler months and bare legs when the sun shines…remember that lovely feeling?
Minis can be worn in the office with softly tailored blouses and smarter jackets or for coffee with your gals’ – you could even wear a co-ord which is still a huge trend for ss22.
You can dress them up with a heel, this year the platform is really in or a long boot or down with a trainer or sandal. You can layer over blazers, denim, suede or leather jackets or over jumpers for extra warmth. Th only down-side is needing to shave more often… no judgment if not though.
Wearable trend 2 – The Maxi length
The maxi… from one extreme to the other with lengths and I am here for it. Petite ladies don’t shy away from the maxi, as long as its neat and you don’t trip over the length you can still wear them, you just might need a tailors help.
There’s something about the maxi length that is SO elegant and effortless that when you wear them you feel a million dollars. I have a real yearning for summer BBQs and wearing a maxi that I can’t get out of my head. Similarly, to the mini you can dress them up and down, use the same jackets for styling as well as shoe options. EASY. If you want to really be bang on trend, the knitted dress is still really taking one for the fabric team this season plus its warmer for now because sadly its not actually spring yet…
Maxi length is so flattering because they create a column shape when you wear them. That column shape balances out your body proportions as well as lengthening you, so you appear taller and even leaner if you want that. Just don’t hide that waist of yours, make sure you use a waist tie or belt unless you have the athletic or apple shape.
If you are tall, (5’7 plus) you can really go mad for the maxi skirts and dresses. The sky is the limit. I would really try and get as much wear out of them. They are perfect for non-work attire or if you have work drinks you can wear them from desk to disco (those were the day’s but you get my drift)
Wearable trend 3 – The Bright colours
Wahey – colour is here to stay! You all know that I specialise in colour, so I did a happy dance for this trend. Interestingly, the trends are suggesting bright colours for evening wear too. When I say evening wear this can also translate to weddings, hen dos, wine clubs (aka drinks at home with your girls) and of course in your day to day and weekend wear.
The statement bright shirt is also bang on trend so you can wear your perfect shade of fave colour to work with a fab mini or maxi or even as a co-ord all paired with a blazer or more casual jacket and you have ticked at least three trend boxes without even trying. Result! Benefits of owning a coord or 2 means you can mix and match with items in your wardrobe or its ready to wear instantly.
If you are nervous of colour, not to worry, you can pair your fave neutrals or check out my blog on how to start wearing colour here.
Wearable trend 4 – Platforms
Ok so not quite as wearable as above for reasons like none of us have worn heels in 2 years and cant remember how to walk etc. However, I think they are a great way of getting back into heel wearing because they are safer than a stiletto because of the wider heel. I think they are comfier, and you don’t even need to wear high platforms. They can be in a trainer or slip-on shoe even.
Platforms are also a great secret for you petite ladies if you want to get an extra inch or two to wear with your maxis or anything you already own.
Platforms can be worn with your jeans, statement bright blouse and blazer, or with a mini or maxi skirt or dress as well as a co-ord or knitted dress. They are also ideal if you are at a wedding all day too.
Wearable trend 5 – Fringing and feathers
Ok not so wearable in everyday life I admit but I couldn’t resist writing about them. Fringing has an awesome vintage feel about it mixed with some boho and I have a feeling that boho is slowly making a comeback soon too.
Fringing is great with denim. Like the maxi the log fringing creates length to the body and helps make the column shape which is so flattering on the body. Tall ladies can go wild with it and petite ladies make sure they dont wear you but don’t avoid them either. Fringing is great for more casual outings like the pub, weekend breaks and going to gigs.
Feathers are probably a bit marmite, also getting a feather wrong could look a tad tacky so be mindful that when choosing a feather piece that they are soft and floaty rather than stiff and neon in colour. The reason being is one, they will itch you if stiff and you don’t want to be uncomfortable and two, you probably don’t want feather boa vibes with the neons. I am obsessed with the pyjama trouser look if you wanted to start wearing them in the safety of your own home before you venture out with them.
I hope to wear some feathers at hen dos and weddings and I’d also love some feather pjs so watch this space… Obvs feather and fringing will work with platforms, maxis, minis and bright colours.
There we have it! My top most wearable trends for SS22 and how easily then will slip into your current wardrobe and give it a fresh boost of energy and inject some excitement into getting dressed every day again.
Let me know your fave and what pieces you go for!
Stylish wishes,
Sian
