The items you need in your Spring wardrobe
Each time seasons change it sends everyone into ‘I have nothing to wear’ mode. Particularly Springtime because we have been in hibernation for so long, we forget that the need for feeling cosy isn’t all year round. Who’d thought it?! After months that feel like years of covering up every inch of our skin, we can now let our pale legs loose and poor arms get some much needed vitamin D!
But how do we transition from winter to spring clothing without buying things we don’t know what to do with? How are we going to be flexible around the ever-changing weather? Sometimes she’s hot and sunny and then BAM she feels like winter again.
My 3 top tips when shopping for Spring pieces.
Make sure the Spring clothing suits your skin tone and body shape.
If you aren’t sure if a colour suits you, ask someone to look at you and if they are immediately drawn to your face, it means you are wearing the colour and it’s a great colour choice for you. If they are drawn to the colour you are wearing first, you may want to rethink your options. If you’d like to understand more about colour, check out my colour analysis session here.
With body shape, it’s all about being in proportion and if you aren’t in proportion you want to create balance to give the illusion that you are in proportion. For example, if you have a small bust and narrow shoulders compared to your hipline, you want to add volume to your shoulder and bust. You can do this by wearing bright colours and extra texture on your shoulders/over your bust and big volume on top.

Does the Spring clothing reflect your dominant and secondary style personality?
If you imagine the spring clothing in question alongside clothing you already own, will it sit next to them or stick out and jar with everything? (Its less important if you are buying a dress or jumpsuit because its one look that you don’t have to match with a top etc) If it fits next to everything you own already then go and try it on.
Ask yourself, what three things can you wear it with that you already own?
This is so important because you want your spring clothing to really work hard in your wardrobe for you. My final check is seeing if there is a way you can restyle it when the season changes again?
There is one rule that goes again that though… if you just LOVE it and your whole heart and body is singing about it… nothing haunts you like the clothes you don’t buy, so just go for it!
The Trench coat you need this spring…
Everyone needs to own a trench coat. It can be a classic trench colour like camel so you know that it will work with absolutely everything or like me you could opt for a bolder statement (I have a lime one… subtle as ever)
I have been in love with sleeveless trench coats for spring clothing forever. They are amazing for creating a column shape with your figure meaning you look taller and even leaner if you want that look. Not having sleeves means you can experiment with textures, prints and colours to really show the world your style personality. It also means chunky knitwear won’t get stuck in your sleeves. A sleeveless trench will go over ANYTHING from a maxi dress to skinny jeans to wide leg trousers as well as a mini skirt. A total result.
A classic trench works exactly in the same way as s sleeveless trench minus being slightly warmer and smarter, so it could make a great work wear coat for this time of year. The choice is really truly yours here.
The Maxi dresses you need for spring clothing…
As you know the maxi dress is back this season. Check out my previous blog on the SS22 trends here if you missed it. I have two fabulous spring maxi dress options here that will work beautifully under spring trench coats as well as underneath the spring jumpers I write about below. Maxi dresses also work in the winter with all the layers and boots. Petite ladies fear not – just take them to your nearest tailor and let them work their magic.
I’m obsessed with this purple maxi from free people. Block colour dresses are super versatile and can be easily worn from day to night. I’m thinking BBQs, hen parties, pool parties, holidays you name it! If the neckline is a bit daring for you, try wearing a leopard print bodysuit or t shirt underneath to experiment with your look. Or wear a denim jacket or denim shirt over it and you will feel confident in no time! Id wear converse, sandals, even biker boots in the winter! Gorgeous.
Its no secret that Queens of archive are my fave brand. Last week they dropped a new collection and you can imagine my excitement. So far, I have managed to resist but I know there’s another drop or 2 around the corner so watch this space.
The benefit of a printed maxi is that you can really smarten them up with a blazer or dress them down and give them some edge with a leather jacket. Prints work with plain trainers or you could clash an animal print with the spring maxi dress you are wearing. Id wear a gold platform and huge gold earrings for a wedding and then for a day trip id wear my converse and take my denim jacket. Sorted!
The spring jumpers you need in your wardrobe.
Spring is the time to transition to sleeveless top layers so that your pretty sleeves that have gorgeous colour, print or textures on can finally be shown. I read someone once that if you body is warm you are much more likely to stay warm and I standby that for these sleeveless vest tops for layering!
Simply wear over the top of a dress and any style of top, blouse, shirt, body suit with your trousers/skirt and you can actually fit your arms in your blazer/leather/denim jackets and stay warm and no need for a coat. What a result. Play around with a more casual vibe like this Frankie shop one or go more classic with the rixo version. Both are super versatile and can also be worn in winter. The frankie vest will work best with clean cut wide trousers and the rixo with more feminine and floaty fabrics.
The wide leg trousers you need this time of year
Another huge trend this SS22 is the wide leg trouser and there isn’t a body shape that they won’t flatter – its revolutionary and helped so many of my clients get back into wearing trousers again. The reason for this is that the create balance from the top of your body right down to the floor so that everything looks in proportion. They are effortless, feel so lovely when you walk in them and again so versatile and can take you from day to night. I wore my me+ em wide legs last week with a client for a colour analysis and body shape session and then went to a comedy club in them, easy!
These Green Ganni wide legs are crops and not for the faint hearted but my word aren’t they sensational? Again, these can be worn all year round, this green is a true colour of the season and the jacquard woven into them will work with any texture or print you wear with them. I think a denim shirt will look ace with these spring trousers. You could keep it simple and wear a plain Tshirt and white trainers or dress them for a night out with the girls with a body suit and platform.
Saint and Sofia are a sustainable brand with an amazing price point and these wide legs actually remind me of me + em but for much less money. Style them with a sleeveless vest and trench coat and you are sorted for work or even a brunch. I also think they are great to travel in so work trips or weekends away looks are sorted now too.
The Spring basics you need for your wardrobe.
I found so many amazing options researching this but my top two are colourful standards for organic ts that don’t cost the earth and my forever faithful, All Saints for an awesome printed T.
If you have had a colour analysis session with me and know your season, you can go mad and get all the colours that you know work for your complexion and reflect your personality. If you haven’t had your ‘colours done’ find out what it’s all about here.
Basic tops make the foundation of your wardrobe, by simply choosing the colour of your basic spring tshirt you can switch up your entire look. Magic style trick 101.
A printed t just adds that extra details to spice up your look, for example jeans and a printed T is way cooler than jeans and a plain old T for your spring style. Wear them over or under anything! The best advice for basics is to buy organic or spend that little bit more on them than you are used to. This is because the quality is so much better, they wash like a dream and stay soft, and they will last you longer too. It’s the buy cheap buy twice concept.
It’s been so wonderful having the sun grace us with her presence this week and she’s also helped me adjust for the new season in terms of shifting out of my winter style head into spring ready to help guide and inspire you all.
Now you know which spring clothing items you need in your wardrobe, its time to shop with intent and make the pieces work hard for you.
Happy shopping,
Stylish wishes,
