The solution for Working from home outfits

working from home outfit

Working from home outfits have had a rollercoaster of a two years haven’t they? We spend one day in our office style clothing and then immediately turned to loungewear or worse yet… staying in our PJs. It was fun for a bit for sure but, it’s a recipe for disaster with our headspace.

Now we are starting to venture back to the office 2/3 days a week it feels great to be getting dressed again and dusting off the cobwebs from our wardrobes, right? Or are you thinking ‘argh no way I have nothing to wear/don’t know what to wear anymore/nothing fits?’ So much change in a short space it’s hard to know what to do with our clothes.

As a Personal Stylist in London, I have been asked so much about transitioning from working from home outfits to office style outfits and then back to working from home style. It is overwhelming, confusing and the general vibe is pretty over it! Why has it become so hard and how do we get our mojo back?

Why is it so hard to get your working from home outfit right?

Let’s be honest… it’s all been about comfort and nothing beats comfort more than pjs, loungewear or active wear. I am guilty of wearing activewear I must admit but after a while it makes me feel tired, lethargic and I lose my sense of self.

So many people think that their jeans don’t fit anymore, that’s not usually the case, we just aren’t used to fabric fitting our bodies anymore. When you leave the house, I guarantee you won’t even think about your jeans, but because we are at home, we fidget and feel immediately uncomfortable.

We now lack motivation of getting dressed, less and less of us are turning our cameras on when on zoom and people care less about how they come across on screen. So how can we get the balance of comfort, professionalism and motivation back?

How to get out of your WFH rut

I suggest doing a wardrobe edit to kick start your motivation as it’s the best way to begin finding new working from home outfits. Working with what you own already is a great way to start rebuilding your confidence with your clothing. I bet it’s disorganised chaos in there too, a bit like your Tupperware draw and causes stress when you look into it. Start by tidying it up – I bet you will find pieces in there that you have completely forgotten about… get them out and restyle them.

Next Id cleanse pieces that look dated, have holes/stains or have a poor fit. Giving them to charity/recycling them is so refreshing and tidy wardrobe – tidy mind!

The next step is all about re-generating new outfits from pieces you own already. We tend to have specific tops that we only wear with certain bottoms, throw your own rule book out of the window and have fun mix and matching everything you own. My Top tips;

1-      Metallics are a neutral and will work with any colour

2-      There are no rules with mixing colours (check out my free colour ebook here for more help)

3-      Start a Pinterest board of working from home outfits that you like and see if you can recreate them with pieces, you own already.

Next up I suggest creating a clothing schedule for you to follow. This stops you from not knowing what to wear and panic dressing every day and also rotates your entire wardrobe so you wear everything that you own…double win.

Finally, develop a shopping list to complete your wardrobe. There’s nothing like the feeling of wearing something new to give you a spring in your step and you will get a buzz every time you pop it on! It’s the ultimate solution to creating working from home outfits and keeping the motivation high.

How to find your working from home outfit style

If you feel as though you have lost your way, learning the basics of your own style is the perfect way to rebuild your relationship with yourself and your clothing. It begins with discovering your style foundations so that they become second nature to you. Understanding these basics will help you to find your style again by creating new habits that allow you to reconnect with yourself so you can transform your relationship with yourself and your wardrobe.

What are style foundations?

Colour Analysis - Discover the very best colours to enhance your complexion and reflect your personality OR the way to want to be perceived.

Body Shape session - Nail how to dress for your figure, understand your shape and feel confident with your clothing choices.

Style Personality - Uncover your dominant style personality, understand it and learn how to refine it as your style and confidence develops

Top tip – if you have dangerous foundations in the house that you live in, you are likely to not feel confident, relaxed and happy in the house – it’s the same with what you wear and your working from home outfits.

How to create an impact on zoom

I think zoom burn out is absolutely on us right now. We are still pitching and trying to win new biz on the daily so how can your working from home outfit help with that? Well, understanding the physical effects wearing certain colours have on our attention spans, energy levels and hormones can help in so many ways.

The colour orange is so dynamic, it’s a warm colour that shows you are friendly and approachable as well as helping to think quickly and react in the moment. For business this is great particularly if you have a job that’s very intuitive or changes very quickly.

Blue releases oxytocin, it helps us as well as whoever is around us feel calm. When you are calmer your communication is better and with stronger communication with others you develop trust and win new business – result!

If colour is new to you and you don’t know where to begin experiment with accessories. Bold earrings and statement necklaces. You could even wear a detachable collar over plain tshirts to add some personality to your plain T. Don’t forget the power of a scarf too.

Ideally you want to be wearing print and colour on zoom, play with block colours vs prints and see which you resonate with more. If you aren’t sure if you like block colour or print more, check out my style personality blog to point you in the right direction.

The best thing about zoom is that you can still have your comfies on your bottom half and no one knows!

My recommendations for working from home outfits.

Fabrics that stretch for working from home outfits are the absolute one here. Jersey and knitted tops and elasticated waistlines feel like PJs but look pulled together, chic all whilst feeling comfortable.

Cozy orange knit (any cozy knit) V neck can be layered over high neck tops when it’s cold but also worn without anything under springtime. It feels like a dressing gown but looks chic…

Accessories for the win…detachable collars, bold earrings, and statement necklaces will polish off and put the final touches to any working from home outfit.

There we have it, my solution to working from home outfits – organise, cleanse, look for gaps, discover your style foundations and start a Pinterest board. If you are still finding your WFH style tricky, reach out here and let’s have a chat about how I can help you.

Stylish wishes,
