The most wearable SS21 Trends
I have had the tough ol’ job of trawling through Vogue. Who what wear, The Outnet and many more fashion sites this week to research the latest SS21 trends and let me tell you… it was a TOTAL joy.
I am starting with what I believe to be, in my opinion, the most wearable trends so we can start keeping our eyes peeled as the new collections drop from our fave brands. I don’t know about you, but I am SO ready to see new prints and Spring colours fill our screens (breaking my heart it’s not the shops just yet)
If you’d like to see more of the trends, before I reveal more over the next couple of weeks, check out who what wear and Vogue, I always find them the most inspiring and well written!
Wide Leg Trousers
My god, I jumped for JOY when I repeatedly saw lots of wide-leg trousers. The wide-leg trouser is SO versatile, you can float around your house in them like pjs but look so well pulled together whilst staying majorly comfy. Wide legs work with ANY shoe, I’m not kidding. I love to wear them with converse and biker boots in the winter and sandals and mules in the summer. They are super elegant with a heel for work or if you’re going to an event like a wedding. There’s hardly anyone I would tell to avoid the wide leg. Be mindful if you are petite with drowning yourself in too much fabric and if you are pear-shaped, watch out for pockets and big pleats/details across your hip area. The beauty of wide-leg is that they create stunning and equal proportions to the body. Check out my Moonsift ‘Wide Stride’ board for some brand-new styles already in the shops.
Big Puff Sleeves
Bold sleeves don’t seem to be going anywhere and look bigger and better than ever! They are the ULTIMATE zoom statement and make waist up dressing a total breeze. I have grown with excitement the past few seasons watching the shoulders and sleeves increase in size and style. I believe they mix feminine and boss lady vibes perfectly. They update the classic white shirt beautifully, enhance a normal boring blouse and polish off any outfit. You can really play with your style with a puff sleeve. Mix an edgy leather skirt with a soft and floaty sleeve and you have nailed SS21. If you are mega busty or sometimes feel broad across your shoulders, be careful with this trend. Make sure you chose a lower (preferably V) neckline so that you don’t add too much width to your top half…. However, if you want to play with your proportions and love it, go for it and send me a pic! Pear and slender shapes… go as big as you feel confident in doing so! If you wear a poof sleeve with a wide leg, promise me that the top is fitted so you don’t over ‘float’ your outfit.
Rising Hemlines
I have had a style shift recently and been craving getting my legs out more so I’m over the moon to see minis creeping back for spring! Micro skirts and mini slip dresses yes, please! I remember feeling frustrated last summer because everything I had was too long to get my legs brown (first world problems I know) so I’m looking forward to seeing how big this trend gets. It’s certainly one reason to keep my running up! This trend is brilliant for anyone who wants to get their legs out (winning) but in particular ladies with an apple, slender, strawberry, or taller frame. If you’d like to brave the mini and not sure where to start, begin with a plain and block colour skirt and lowly build up colour/print when you feel more confident. Like the trousers, you can style minis with trainers, bikers, sandals and dress them up with heels! So versatile and if the skirt has a darker base you can layer it over tights when it’s cold! Also, you can pair a hoodie, knit, blazer, or leather/denim jacket over a mini, super easy and simple to style, no rules!!
Loose denim
Hello, relaxed and slouch fit denim, where have you been all my life?! I now own a pair of Levi ribcage straight jeans and they have transformed my jeans life. I’m actually still obsessing over the 70s flare which I think we can def still wear this season. Now, these images of jeans are next level, I wouldn’t suggest going quite this slouchy unless you are super tall. If you go too slouchy you are in danger of totally hiding your figure which I do not support at all. Opt for a straight or wide-leg jean, that is high waisted so we can at least see your waist! The skin-tight top to balance out the proportions. The amazing thing about the loose jean trend though is that it can be made super sexy and date night ish with a classic blazer and heel… the ultimate day to night look! Just don’t wear if they drag on the floor in the rain, it’ll take you back to soggy school trousers that soak up all the puddles and travel up your legs making you shiver all day!
Skintight tops
From one extreme to the other!!! Not for the faint-hearted! The skin-tight tops are a LOT less scary than they look. They are perfect for layering, especially when it gets to Spring and you don’t need/want your thick wool turtle necks anymore! I think they are a really easy way to add a bit of edge to your outfit. I also think they are a great way to add some subtle textures and prints without adding bulk to an outfit. You can make them super sexy for date night too! A nice lacy bra underneath and a leather jacket over the top! Gorgeous! I advise you to wear them tucked into high-waisted bottoms, and definitely the wide-legged trousers/loose jeans for bang on SS21 style! You could even style them under dresses/tank tops
Simple Layering
Ahhhh layering… so simple but can cause massive panics and can make your proportions a bit off if done incorrectly. I would look at it as simple and relaxed tailoring, so less fitted items that glide and float rather than cinch and create structure. I think this type of layering will be easy to achieve with tonal dressing. Neutral hues are shown here as an example but you could use three types of blues or pinks/reds etc to achieve a bolder look. I am 100% behind a loose trouser underneath a longer dress in silk or fine knit. I’d still be tempted to suggest cinching your waist in with a belt though, the long layering is best if you are taller with the slender shape. However, this can be easily adapted for any shape. For example, layering over a long shirt over an outfit but leaving the buttons undone so it creates length up the body and you can still see your shape! If you are busty, try layering with V or open-necked tops so that you avoid the ‘sausage boob’ effect.
House slippers
There’s nothing more exciting to look down at your feet on your commute or under your desk and see a glorious pair of shoes smiling up at you. Now most of us are WFH, our poor shoes have taken a back seat and been replaced by slippers. I struggle in slippers as I’m prone to falling upstairs…haha (luckily I only have 2 steps in my flat) But in all seriousness, I think this is a fabulous trend. Comfy and gorgeous home slippers that keep you cosy and look great all day long! Great with your jeans, skirts, and your PJs…obvs.
There we have my take on the most wearable trends of SS21. Ease your way into the latest trends from the comfort of your own home! Next week I will fill you in on the SS21 trends that are easy to incorporate into your wardrobe!
