5 of the most eye-catching SS21 trends
Last week I introduced what I think to be the easiest and most wearable trends this SS21. This week is all about the trends I absolutely love but might be harder to wear on a day-to-day basis! This could be as they are totally OTT and out there (not that I think it should stop you wearing them, but how confident you feel is more important) or take a bit of time to nail (aka some practice because if they aren’t styled properly, it could knock your confidence) or even just not hugely wearable all the time… aka capes in the house! (I would obvs…)
Living Room Disco
I mean do I even have to write anything more about HOW amazing this trend is?! This is me ALL over. My mum describes me as a human magpie, and I’m pretty sure you all know I am totally sequin obsessed. It might be a marmite trend (I’ll be delving into ‘marmite trends’ on my blog next week) and a touch OTT for some, however, I genuinely believe sequins are for all year round not just for Christmas. Sparkly numbers, in the words of Marie Kondo, spark joy and my word we need some joy in our lives right now. SO, if I can ever give you just ONE piece of style advice, wear sequins in the sunshine because my god, they sparkle like heaven. I also love a dance and my best girlfriends and I always say ‘Let’s go for a disco dance’ instead of out out… I think we should all have a zoom living room disco with our girlfriends this weekend!
Bold, floor-length dresses.
Ok, so instantly jaw droppingly beautiful, eye catching and head turning. Immediate glamour, elegance and feeling amazing. But also can go dangerously wrong… one step on the hem and you’re a goner, head first down (or in my case up) the stairs. You can also risk drowning yourself in too much fabric (which sounds super sad as I feel like there should be no limit on fabric) but being lost in a dress undoes the glam and sadly ruins the whole vibe. If you are petite chose a drop hem so that we can see the bottom of your gorge legs and cinch in that waist of yours. To get maxi results (see what I did there) wear a colour that helps your complexion radiate (if you don’t know what colours work best for you, get in touch to find out more) and also try an open neckline to create height and length ready to float around dreamily all day.
Basics with a twist
Now, this is an awesome trend that I think is very easy and super transformational for items you already own and for instantly lift your look. Think fusing a classic white shirt and twisting it into your waist belt, button-down dresses open over jeans and a nice top, and wardrobe staples in bright hues! Get your beloved and trusty items like your trench coat, blazer and wear with long layers, add a scarf and twist instead of tuck! The return of the twist in your shirts! What a throwback! So in short, experiment with fusion your basics by giving them a new lease of life with a twist and some layering! Easy and wallet-conscious!
Capes
Well well well…. What a TREAT. I didn’t realise how much I needed a cape until I saw this trend. I think sourcing a vintage cape will be the ultimate way to embrace this super trend. I think what’s fantastic here that’s for once, not go big or go home, it can be a beautifully subtle cape blending into your dress or oozing elegance draping over the top of your outfit. You could even go mini and get one that finishes at your waist which will be super flattering! If you wanted to invest (which I highly recommend) Id stick with a block colour in your fave hue (maybe even a neutral) and develop it from there!
Cut outs.
My initial reaction to this was a huge eye roll if I’m honest haha. But what I have noticed is its not the huge gaping holes across the most unflattering part of our midriff but smaller, softer cut outs below our bust or on our ribs that enhance our curves in the right way and the right places! Peekaboo cut outs that spice up what would initially be very conservative dresses and I’m officially on board! I think it’s a great way to dry new styles of dresses and when we get a heat wave this summer (fingers crossed!!) we will be grateful of the breathing space!! Plus they will look awesome with sequins or even a cape!
There we have it! 5 SS21 trends that catch the right type of attention, give you a spring in your step and aren’t OTT. I fully intend to brace them head on and lose myself in my wardrobe experimenting with twists and revamping my staple pieces! Nest week we have my marmite trends!
